Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a place for my child?

After reading our entry criteria, admissions terms and conditions and fees information, please follow our step-by-step process. Please ensure that, in addition to completing and submitting the application form, you submit all documents listed in step 2 of the application process, otherwise we will be unable to progress your application.

How long will I have to wait before a space becomes available?

As an international school we experience a certain amount of uncertainty in terms of our waiting list.  It is always better to make an application as early as possible.  We do not have set periods of registration and accept applications throughout the year.  We try to keep in regular contact with those on the waiting list to ensure we are aware of your plans and timeframes and to keep our lists as up to date as possible.

I have more than one child and would like them admitted to school at the same time, is this possible?

We do have a sibling priority system. If you have one child accepted into the school, any others will get priority on their year group waiting lists.

Do you have a priority system for those children on the waiting list?

Applications are processed on the basis of date of application. We do not give priority to any category of pupil on our waiting list other than siblings (see above).

How do you decide which year group my child will enter?

What is the minimum school starting age?

The first point of entry is in the September after your child has turned three years of age, i.e. a child must be 3 on or before 31 August in order to join the school during the new academic year starting in September.

Do you admit children at any point during the school year?

Yes, we do. For students entering Years 10, 11, 12 and 13, we consider their mid-year applications on a case by case basis.

Why do you specify that children have to have a strong level of English?

As you are aware, British School Muscat is a British school teaching the English curriculum in the English language. We have limited resources to help children where English is not their first language and have found that children may suffer from low self-esteem when they have insufficient English to access the curriculum.

How do you measure a child’s level of English?

For applications for admission to Years 1 to 11, we use a cognitive ability test supported by an English language assessment carried out by English as an additional language teaching staff.

For information regarding admission to Years 12 and 13, see here.

My child needs additional support, can you help?

We try to help wherever possible but we do have limited resources.  Each case is reviewed individually.

My child has restricted mobility will that affect their application?

Each case is reviewed individually but our site is built on a steep hill with many steps.
