Why do we teach Art & Design?

Whether they are digitally manipulating images on the computer, expressing themselves using paint or getting the feel of textiles or clay, pupils use art and design to look afresh at the world around them. Experimenting with colours, materials, textures and patterns or trying out new processes, helps pupils communicate what they see, feel and imagine. Pupils study different types of artwork from portraits to ceramics and discover how images can tell stories or express ideas and learn how art, craft and design enrich our lives and can lead to many kinds of interesting and creative jobs.

Here at The British School - Muscat, we promote Art & Design to ALL pupils by:

  • encouraging through direct personal expression; imagination, power of observation, analytical abilities and practical attitudes, using direct experience of practical skills, historical, contextual and cultural studies, leading to a fuller understanding of the visual arts.
  • fostering and directing the creative energy of pupils in a positive way, encouraging independent learning through thought and making, recognising the importance of each pupil finding their own creative and personal voice.
  • creating stimulating environments for pupils and staff to work in and making pupils aware of the opportunities and applications of Art and Design in modern culture and careers.
