Artefacts

Welcome to the 7th consecutive ‘Artefacts Exhibition 2010’, held at The Omani Society for Fine Arts here in Muscat, Oman.

This annual exhibition lasting for one week permits final year GCSE, AS and A2 level Art & Design examination students, together with an exciting selection of work from Key Stage 3 to Year 10, to exhibit their creative and visual work to both parents and the general public.

The Art & Design Department at The British School Muscat is bursting at the seams with creative students and record numbers opting for the subject to study at GCSE, AS and A2 Level. The department is an exciting, busy and colourful area within the school, where you will find students of all ages, from Key Stage 3 through to Sixth Form, enjoying the creative atmosphere and meeting friendly staff during formal lessons and after school activities. The 3 members of staff in the department consisting of 2 teachers and 1 technician, work extremely hard to create such a pleasant, contented and well organised environment in which to learn.

Artefacts Prize – Farris El Alwan

On Sunday 30th May the Opening Ceremony of ‘Artefacts New Talent 2010’ took place at The Omani Society for Fine Arts. And WOW, what a show! The standards of work displayed by KS3, GCSE and A Level students were superb this year and some would say the best yet! It really was a fantastic collection of creative talent with over 80 pieces of examination work on display. The exhibitions main sponsor for the second year running was Qatar Airways, who kindly donated a free return ticket to any destination in Europe to the fortunate student who, in the opinion of the judges, had performed and displayed work to the highest level of achievement. The judges: Mr Ali Khaliq (Qatar Airways Regional Manager), Mr Steve Howland (Principal), Ms Bev Coull (Edexcel Moderator) and Mrs Rachel Connor (Head of Art & Design), certainly had a tough choice to make!

There were SO many contenders for the prize this year, as the range of work on display varied so much and the creative skill levels were tremendously high. There were self portraits, textile pieces, abstract paintings, thematic works, sculptural exhibits and hangings. What a choice! But after 5 contenders were chosen by Mr Ali Khaliq and Mr Howland, the final decision was made by Mrs Connor and Ms Bev Coull, the external visiting moderator for Edexcel. This year the winner was a Year 12 AS Level student, FARRIS EL ALWAN, who in the judges opinion, had worked so hard on his examination coursework, in such depth and to a degree level standard. The work displayed was outstanding! Sheet upon sheet of informative drawings and sketches, in-depth contextual research, experimentation and development. WOW! Well done Farris!

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Principal

Welcome to the British School - Muscat website!

By 21st February 2012 I will have completed my first 100 days at the British School - Muscat. By that time I will have held discussions with all the staff, over 200 students from both the Primary and Senior Schools, and provided several opportunities for parents and governors to express their views about the school and the priorities for BSM’s development over the next few years.

Through this extensive consultation I have learned rapidly about BSM and the opportunities and challenges facing the school at this stage of its development. Many of the ideas from the first 100 days consultation will be incorporated into the 2012-15 School Development Plan. The plan is scheduled to be approved by the Board of Governors in June later this year. Our aspiration is for BSM is to be world class. This means that we will strive to:

  • Maintain BSM’s Outstanding inspection judgement (2009) and place the school in the very highest tier of schools inspected under the OFSTED inspection framework.
  • Drive up student achievement to levels comparable with the most successful state and independent schools in the UK.
  • Establish BSM as a world leader in personalising learning.
  • Engage students and parents in the learning process to the highest possible levels.
  • Provide students with a compelling programme of opportunities to develop their skills and competencies as global entrepreneurs fitting for a world class school.

I look forward to working with students, staff, parents, the governing body and the wider community to achieve this aim.

Kind Regards,
Principal Mr Kai Vacher B.A. (Hons), NPQH
