Special Consideration

• It is possible for students to apply to the Exam Boards for Special Consideration to be applied to the marking of any exam paper(s) where their exam performance may have been affected by situations beyond their control.

• These reasons include bereavement, difficult family circumstances and illness. Evidence is always required to support any claim. If you qualify the Exams Officer will make the exam board aware of your circumstances and they will decide what action they can apply.

• Applications on medical grounds always require supporting medical evidence from a doctor, and must cover the date of the actual exam – i.e. cannot be dated retrospectively.

• There are strict rules for applying for Special Consideration and the exam boards make individual decisions according to their guidelines. The school is not involved in this process, although the Exams Officer does have to support the initial application.

• The Exam Boards decision is final in these cases. They will not enter into any discussion with students, nor is there any feedback, nor course to appeal.

• You should see the Exams Officer if you experience any circumstances that may have adversely affected your exam performance.

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Principal

Welcome to the British School - Muscat website!

I have now completed my first 100 days at the British School - Muscat. I have held discussions with all the staff, over 200 students from both the Primary and Senior Schools, and provided several opportunities for parents and governors to express their views about the school and the priorities for BSM's development over the next few years.

Through this extensive consultation I have learned rapidly about BSM and the opportunities and challenges facing the school at this stage of its development. Many of the ideas from the first 100 days consultation will be incorporated into the 2012-15 School Development Plan. The plan is scheduled to be approved by the Board of Governors in June later this year. Our aspiration is for BSM is to be world class. This means that we will strive to:

  • Maintain BSM’s Outstanding inspection judgement (2009) and place the school in the very highest tier of schools inspected under the OFSTED inspection framework.
  • Drive up student achievement to levels comparable with the most successful state and independent schools in the UK.
  • Establish BSM as a world leader in personalising learning.
  • Engage students and parents in the learning process to the highest possible levels.
  • Provide students with a compelling programme of opportunities to develop their skills and competencies as global entrepreneurs fitting for a world class school.

I look forward to working with students, staff, parents, the governing body and the wider community to achieve this aim.

Kind Regards,
Principal Mr Kai Vacher B.A. (Hons), NPQH
