Record Results in 2009!

I am delighted to report that the vast majority of pupils obtained strong results in 2008-09 and achieved the best ever set of results at the end of Key Stage 1 (age 7) and at GCSE (age 16).  These are record results for our school and strengthen its official status as an ‘Outstanding’ and ‘High Performing School’.

I thank staff and parents for their combined efforts and congratulate pupils upon their successes.  Well done everyone!

Here are our results for 2009.  Please note that some of the national results are for 2008 because we have yet to receive the official 2009 results.  However, the national 2008 and 2009 results will be very similar, which means that comparisons between BSM’s and the national results can be relied upon.

Key Stage 3 (age 14) Results - The expected standard of attainment at the end of Key Stage 3 is half way between Level 5 and6. Please note that students can only achieve Level 8 in maths.  There is no Level 8 assessment for English and science.  The table shows the percentage of students who achieved at or beyond each level compared to the national averages for England in 2007 because there have been no national results since then.  However, at BSM we still asses our students at age 14 because it provides a useful indicator of performance for pupils, parents and staff.

Key Stage 4 (age 16) GCSE Results - The standard measure of GCSE performance is the percentage of students who gain five or more GCSEs graded A*-C including English and maths.  This is shown below as 5A*-Ci.  The percentage of A* and A grades is also a standard measure of attainment.  Both measures for BSM are very high, which is a credit to many of our students and their teachers.

Exemplary Attainment at GCSE Capped Best 8 Grades - Out of our cohort of 70 students, 12 (17%) achieved at least 8 A* or A grades.  This is an exemplary standard of attainment and I congratulate these students upon reaching such a high standard.  They are:

Ramdisa Agasi, Lydia Cockerham, Alex Hall, Abdul Khan, Won Ko, Nivedita Mathukumar, Mutiara Mohd Noor, Jenny Moorhead, Christina O’Hanlon, Leonie Portanger, Imran Shamsunahar and Rachael Wood.  Well done!

Early Entry Fast Tracked (age 14 or 15) GCSE Results - This year 19 students were fast tracked and sat their GCSEs one or two years early in Arabic, Dutch, French, German and maths, and some sat a short-course GCSE in physical education.  No grade was below a B and collectively the results were:

100% grades A*-C,
57.1% grade A*
28.6% grade A
14.3% grade B
0%      grade C and below.

Remarkably all 12 maths grades were A* or A with 75% of the grades being A*.

Free Standing Maths Qualification (age 16) FSMQ Results – This year 18 of our top maths students sat, in addition to their GCSEs, the Free Standing Maths Qualification (FSMQ) which, in terms of difficulty, is between a GCSE and a GCE A level.  Please note that grade range for the FSMQ is A, B, C, D, E and U.  There is no A* grade.  The results were:

77.8%  grade A
11.1%  grade B
5.6%    grade C
5.6%    grade D
0%       grade E and below

Sixth Form GCE AS Level (age 18) Results - At GCE AS Level (usually sat in Year 12) grades A to E are a pass and the percentage achieved by a school is a measure of performance.  Additional measures are the percentage of A & B grades and the Average Point Score (APS) per examination entry.  APS is calculated by awarding a set number of points per grade; with A attracting the highest number of points and E the lowest.  The average is then calculated.  Our results are:
