Specialists - Secondary Music

The Secondary Section of the Music Department at the British School-Muscat gives all students the opportunity to create [compose], re-create [perform], and appreciate [discover] music, experiencing and learning about a wide range of styles and musical influences. All students taking music will have the opportunity to play an instrument in class and to perform in the regular class concerts.

Students are also encouraged to study an instrument by participating in our Private Musical Instrument Lesson Programme. Once a student chooses an instrument they would like to learn, we try our best to find them a private specialist for that instrument. BSM has a dynamic team of instrumental teachers that give lessons during the afternoons at the school.

After studying Music as a core subject in Key Stage 3, students have the opportunity to choose Music as one of their GCSE and A-Level subjects. Music Examination students have recently produced a compilation CD of their compositions entitled, ‘From Us to You’.

As well as offering Music to A-Level, we support our students’ musical development through a varied co-curricular programme. Regular concerts and recitals showcase the musical talents of our students. Students have the opportunity to perform in weekly lunchtime recitals, school recitals and in some of the many concerts we give in the Muscat community. During December we perform annual ‘Sing Christmas’ concerts at the Al Bustan, Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza and Shangri La Hotels and give a ‘Sing Summer’ concert in May. Musicians can join the orchestra, Senior Singers, wind ensemble, string orchestra and the Silver Sounds Steel Band.

The Music, Drama and Dance Departments have also combined to produce highly successful performances of musicals such as ‘West Side Story’ and ‘Oliver’.

We encourage gifted and talented musicians to attend the prestigious annual Young Musicians of the Gulf Competition in Bahrain.

In the Music Department we aim to provide a Music programme which not only caters for the musical development of all ages and abilities, but also provides a focal point, both within the school and the wider community.
