" The Vision of the British School-Muscat is to offer the highest quality British education to children of wide ranging abilities and nationalities. It values cultural diversity and provides a caring, innovative and stimulating environment, realizing the full potential and celebrating the success of every student. The School's curriculum will also develop the child as a whole person, provide them with learning-to-learn skills and will prepare them to lead a successful life in an inter-cultural world. This School encourages the active involvement of parents and the wider community in the learning process. "

Our school is a very special place with a Vision that calls for students to be responsible world citizens and life-long learners who appreciate and respect the richness and diversity of cultures. We provide students with the opportunity to achieve excellence and develop their creative, social, emotional, intellectual and physical growth.

We are proud of our heritage. We believe in traditional values, such as courteous behaviour and smart appearance. We develop enthusiasm, tolerance and a love of learning. We promote the development of the whole individual within a dynamic, multicultural and responsible community.

The British School-Muscat was established in 1971, in the earliest days of modern Oman, to provide a high standard of British education for English-speaking children. Starting in the house of the country's BP manager in Riyam with only three pupils, the School rapidly expanded, moving first to the Consulate Club at the British Embassy and, later, to its current location in Medinat Qaboos.

His Majesty, Sultan Qaboos bin Said (pictured left), graciously granted the School a Royal Charter, on 3 May 1973.

Thirty years later, the School has almost 888 students of over 50 nationalities, from ages 3 to 18, and has significantly expanded so that it has some of the best facilities available in the Gulf.

The school has a long tradition of welcoming young people from many different countries. Friendships develop quickly between pupils from diverse backgrounds, enabling them to discover new cultures and appreciate perspectives different from their own. We are committed to celebrating different cultures and enjoying the wonders of living in Oman.

Our Statement of Aims

In pursuit of our Vision, we aim to:

  • Provide high quality education which enables all children and students to move onto the next phase in their education without disadvantage.
  • Develop children's understanding of, and respect for, other cultures and nationalities.
  • Develop children's self-confidence and range of social skills and behaviours in order to obtain personal satisfaction and fulfilment in each stage of development.
  • Develop in children and students the ability to apply themselves to a wide range of educational, social and physical activities.
  • Promote a code of behaviour which respects the needs and rights of others.
  • Ensure that parents are informed and involved in their child's education.
  • Provide resources to enable staff to meet improvement targets.

The achievement of these aims underpins everything that the School does. Our approaches to teaching and learning, the pastoral care system, our extensive sports and drama activities, the residential visit programme are all ways in which the School provides opportunities for children and students to realise their full potential.

The School's Improvement Plan is aimed at further improving the teaching and learning in the School. It is a very specific plan aimed at raising standards in key areas of the School.
